Is Yours an Active Workplace? Here’s How to Make It One
It’s ironic that healthcare workers, who dedicate their lives to promoting health, often find themselves harmed by prolonged standing or sitting at work. These physically demanding positions can lead to aches, pains, and even long-term health issues. The result? Sick days and reduced workplace efficiency.
But there are solutions! The quickest fix is to encourage an active workplace. Here’s how you can make it happen.
Set the Place to Set the Pace
You don’t need to be a Feng Shui expert to create a workspace that promotes fitness. Start by designing a breakroom with enough space for stretching. Make sure staircases are well-lit and easy to access—climbing a few flights can be great exercise! Sometimes the best "exercise" doesn’t feel like exercise but still makes a difference.
Take it Outside
Does your team have activities like tennis, netball, indoor soccer, or touch rugby after work? Even if these activities aren’t directly at the workplace, they’re a great way to foster a healthy team culture. Consider sponsoring a team, putting up posters about local games, or adding these events to your internal newsletter. You could even offer a small allowance for team activities!
Encourage Microbreaks
Small breaks during the day can work wonders for physical and mental health. Encourage team members to take short walks, stretch, or move around every hour. Microbreaks can improve concentration and energy levels, benefiting everyone in the long run.
Provide Active Equipment
If possible, add equipment like standing desks, balance boards, or even small weights in the office. These items encourage subtle, continuous movement throughout the day, contributing to a healthier and more engaged team.
